Rumper – Protection for your Rudder July 22, 2009

I posted this on Twitter several weeks ago, for those that don’t follow that stuff check this out.

RumperMy boat hangs on a lift over  the water most of the time as many others do. I am near the end of the pier system so I seem to pick up more boat dings from fishing boats and new sailors than others.  One day I got a huge ding, gouge and I was… livid, as anyone else would be if they had paid good money for a great fairing  job or spent time doing it themselves.  So I went on a mission to find something to protect my rudder’s trailing edge.  Barbed wire and small mines were overruled by the JYC harbor committee as they believe this would be too aggressive.

So I went to Walmart and purchased a toy pool noodle for $2.  I also bought some small line to attach it.  The key here is to buy the noodle with a hole through the center of it.  Use a sharp knife or razor and slice straight down one side of the noodle to the center hole to split the noodle open.  Don’t worry if you aren’t exactly straight with your cut, it will work anyway.   Now punch a couple of holes between the back edge of the center hole and the new aft edge of the Rumper to thread the line through. You’ll need 2 pieces of line about 18-24″ long for this.  Punch one through up high above the waterline on the rudder near the head, and one down low to hold the bottom part of the Rumper.

To attach, first slide the Rumper onto the top of the trailing edge of the rudder. Tie the first line (at the bottom of the Rumper) around the rudder blade loosely so it can slide down.  Now get your tiller extension.  As you push the Rumper down the trailing edge it will try to slide off, use the grip end of the tiller extension to lightly tap the Rumper back in place and keep sliding it down until you reach the bottom of the rudder.  (This is really easier than it sounds.)  Tie off the top of the Rumper to the rudder head and you’re done.

Tips:

  1. Make sure the rudder is out of the water when installing and removing.  The Rumper is really buoyant.
  2. After you have positioned the line in the Rumper, tie small stopper knots on either side of the Rumper to make it difficult for “boat guests” to pull out the line or you’ll have to re-thread.
  3. When removing, untie the top line first. Then just push the whole Rumper off  the bottom of the rudder. Use the tiller extension to help push down the line at the bottom as it will try to bind. No need to have crew hold you by your feet while you untie it.
  4. If the boat feels sluggish on the first beat, make sure you have removed the Rumper.

It’s that time for the GCC at PCYC! July 25-26. Those that made it over for the Birthday Regatta got a nice little warm up weekend. The rest of us will have to learn as we go. Swift currents are in store I am sure.
From JYC we will have Supper Club, Fresh Aire and Dynamo Humm returning to defend her championship from last year. Looks like we are expecting around 17 boats. See you all there.

Jackson, MS — Looks like just another “ho humm” year for the DH team of Mart Lamar, Edgar Buchanan and Tim Taylor. They needed a win over Big John in today’s race and they did. At the Fleet Christmas party I thought I overheard Mart and John talking a little smack. I’m sure it wasn’t them, probably just the crew. Timmy doesn’t know how to whisper nor does he care. I heard everything from, “It’ll be too cold to race Sunday,” to “I just don’t have the crew, it’s an arm’s race.” Well yes, I guess it is an arms race. I want the biggest arms I can get. I understand Team Blue Bayou 2 was trying to fly in Mr. Flynn for the last race to insure he would win, and get a gold star on his refrigerator. But that was too expensive, might have been a little heavy too. But we seem to look the other way when the wind is up to 20. BB2 had to settle for local Quantum Rock Star Ian who shows up before biggest race or the year smoking a cuban and sucking on a Bud. That’s nerves of steel. Go get ’em.
So the word is everyone got a great start, clear air and all. But Team McGowan was by far the fastest they’ve ever been. New Sails? Mr. McG tried to light up a couple of folks at the party talking about his new set of rags that he is sure will whip everybody. He may be right. Stay tuned to the first series to see how he does.

Our locals, Dale Currie, Tom Williams and Bishop Blackwell went to Montego Bay this week for a the Jamin’ 2008 Regatta.  I’ve always heard this is a great place to go sail in December. According to the text messages the boys are having a blast.  First day reports are summarized as cool blue water, nice breezes, rolling waves, 75 degrees, and dis-masting.  Apparently some bulkheads needed some maintenance on the charter boat.  Everyone is ok, No worries mon!

The next day, the Supper Club acquired another charter and as I hear it was a real upgrade. Bish texted:

Ok – here’s the salt water update. race 1, 2nd rode nice lifts, breeze at 10 and building. Race 2 and 3, took 6s – breeze heavy at the start (teens with cool sea swells) then dies with weird little puffs at the leeward mark and doldrums down that third of the course. 4th race really weird with a funky starboard rounding at the yacht club – took a 4th.

We’re real light. But now we’re off to the Groovy Grouper for dinner with the fleet. Last race was a throw out – we’re tied for fourth 2 points out of  3rd.

Pass Christian YC will host the annual GYA J/22 Gulf Coast Championships Aug 2-3. According to the e-mail flying around this should be a great event and very well attended.  I am hearing numbers of 16-17 boats.  The competition is always great there. Always great race committee. Most always breeze and most always current.

Fresh Aire won’t be able to make it this year. One of my really good friends and mentor has a wedding planned for his daughter on AUGUST SECOND AT TWO O’CLOCK!  Actually if I have to go to a wedding, I would rather it not be one of those evening weddings where I just might think I could make it back to Jackson after the last race on Saturday.  First I wouldn’t make it, second my friend would be mad at me for even trying it. So, y’all have fun.

We do have two boats coming down from JYC. Robert Muller is bringing Air Express for the first time down there. He will have crew of Jim O’Daniel and Charlotte Buchanan.  Also reporting for duty is Mart Lamar with crew Edgar Buchanan and crew “TBA”.  Both with be formidable on the coast.  I wish you all great luck.  I would love to have someone send be results at the end of the day to post on this blog!

There better be champagne at this wedding!

Update from the SOTC: July 27

I received a call from Peter Gambel yesterday with an update on the first weekend of the Summer on the Coast event. They had a great time last weekend with great breeze, a couple of “isolated” storms and some heat.  Peter hasn’t been there the past couple of years and remarked “these guys have gotten a lot better or I’ve gotten worse!”  Well I won’t comment, but the level of racing is definitely better than it has been in the past. Of course, it helps having a great venue.  Looks like Chris, Dave and Macho got in gear early and never looked back. Congrats to them, Dwight LeBlanc and crew on their second and Boo Heausler and his crew on the third.  I’ll bet next weekend is going to have some great racing.  Look out Chris the target is on you now!

It was touch and go in the last race of the Spring Series. as reported last week there was only one point between the top three boats. JV was able to sneak out an aggressive port tack start and he never looked back from there. Dynamo had guest helmsman, Robert aboard since Mart was out of town but that wasn’t enough to keep JV in second place. Good racing by all in this last race. I’m looking forward to a drifting Summer Series. (NOT!)

Also let’s welcome two new teams to Fleet 63. Dr. Giorgio Aru has purchased Escape #729 and Russell McCarty has recently purchased Laughing Stock #711. Russell and Giorgio are already coming up to speed quickly as they are putting their crew lists together.

Feb 24, Nice day for a sail February 24, 2008

All in all it was a nice day for a sail.  Low sixties, light breeze in the beginning with the wind shifting about 180 degrees on the leeward leg. So, unlike a normal leeward leg where all the boats catch the guys in front, all the boats in front got further ahead.  But that’s just the way the ball bounces.

Thanks to everyone who offered me a ride today. Even Marty said if no one would sail with me I could go with him. Ouch! I know he meant it well, but some how the delivery stung a bit. So I went with his son Willem and Caleb, director and editor of the famous viral wipeout video.  People are still talking about this thing.  I bet it hits a 10,000 views on YouTube. Maybe Dr. Crash will give us some tips.

After looking at the Kattack performance report I realize we sailed a very long course today. We were OK on speed, but the distance was a killer.  I expect we’ll be better next week.  Bish is sending photos to me so stay tuned for updates.  In case you are wondering about the Flickr photos in the sidebar, those are Beer Can snapshots from Saturday.
