Jackson, MS — Looks like just another “ho humm” year for the DH team of Mart Lamar, Edgar Buchanan and Tim Taylor. They needed a win over Big John in today’s race and they did. At the Fleet Christmas party I thought I overheard Mart and John talking a little smack. I’m sure it wasn’t them, probably just the crew. Timmy doesn’t know how to whisper nor does he care. I heard everything from, “It’ll be too cold to race Sunday,” to “I just don’t have the crew, it’s an arm’s race.” Well yes, I guess it is an arms race. I want the biggest arms I can get. I understand Team Blue Bayou 2 was trying to fly in Mr. Flynn for the last race to insure he would win, and get a gold star on his refrigerator. But that was too expensive, might have been a little heavy too. But we seem to look the other way when the wind is up to 20. BB2 had to settle for local Quantum Rock Star Ian who shows up before biggest race or the year smoking a cuban and sucking on a Bud. That’s nerves of steel. Go get ’em.
So the word is everyone got a great start, clear air and all. But Team McGowan was by far the fastest they’ve ever been. New Sails? Mr. McG tried to light up a couple of folks at the party talking about his new set of rags that he is sure will whip everybody. He may be right. Stay tuned to the first series to see how he does.

We’ve been having some pretty good sailing days around here (JYC). Running lots of Kattack tracks and such.  I haven’t figured out if my boat is faster or not since I had a little keel augmentation done this summer. However with most augmentations I am told it’s mostly cosmetic, great to look at, expensive to do  but the performance is the same.  Get my drift?  I have lots of people looking at my keel now and not paying attention to me.  And they want to touch it…I think I need to put a padded cover over it.

Moving on, Liptons are now canceled for the second time.  Hurricanes get in the way of my sailing plans.  Our friends at BWYC are having a tough time with trying to find a reschedule date for this great event, and the rest of us are putting our families on hold until a date is published.  Just kidding our families know they come first. Until the NOR goes out!!!  WooHoo! hope my wife doesn’t read this.    Just kidding Honeybear!

So how will this Liptons reschedule affect the rest of the Capdevielle season.  Probably every event in the GYA is wondering if the new date will fall on their fall regatta weekend.  I think one year this happened to JYC. The Lipton was scheduled right on top of our biggest local event of the year.  If that’s what happens so be it.  We weren’t happy about it then… But I am sure the GYA will honor the calendar.

Pass Christian YC will host the annual GYA J/22 Gulf Coast Championships Aug 2-3. According to the e-mail flying around this should be a great event and very well attended.  I am hearing numbers of 16-17 boats.  The competition is always great there. Always great race committee. Most always breeze and most always current.

Fresh Aire won’t be able to make it this year. One of my really good friends and mentor has a wedding planned for his daughter on AUGUST SECOND AT TWO O’CLOCK!  Actually if I have to go to a wedding, I would rather it not be one of those evening weddings where I just might think I could make it back to Jackson after the last race on Saturday.  First I wouldn’t make it, second my friend would be mad at me for even trying it. So, y’all have fun.

We do have two boats coming down from JYC. Robert Muller is bringing Air Express for the first time down there. He will have crew of Jim O’Daniel and Charlotte Buchanan.  Also reporting for duty is Mart Lamar with crew Edgar Buchanan and crew “TBA”.  Both with be formidable on the coast.  I wish you all great luck.  I would love to have someone send be results at the end of the day to post on this blog!

There better be champagne at this wedding!

Update from the SOTC: July 27

I received a call from Peter Gambel yesterday with an update on the first weekend of the Summer on the Coast event. They had a great time last weekend with great breeze, a couple of “isolated” storms and some heat.  Peter hasn’t been there the past couple of years and remarked “these guys have gotten a lot better or I’ve gotten worse!”  Well I won’t comment, but the level of racing is definitely better than it has been in the past. Of course, it helps having a great venue.  Looks like Chris, Dave and Macho got in gear early and never looked back. Congrats to them, Dwight LeBlanc and crew on their second and Boo Heausler and his crew on the third.  I’ll bet next weekend is going to have some great racing.  Look out Chris the target is on you now!

Pass Christian Yacht Club August 4-5, 2007
by Phil Bylsma

Fourteen well-sailed boats showed up in Pass Christian on 4 & 5 August 2007 for the J22 GYA Championship.  Four different boats earned a first place finish in the five race series.   Twelve out of 14 final finish places were altered based on results of the last race proving once again, it isn’t over until it’s over in the J22 class.  At the end, only one point separated each of the top three boats AND tie breakers were required to separate fourth, fifth, seventh, eighth, and ninth place finishes!  Great OD racing in a class encompassing talented men and women of all ages, newcomers as well as experienced.  Congratulations to all on a great regatta and hats off to Chris Wientjes, Dave Bolyard, and Macho Slavich on first place.

                        SUMMARY OF RACES

Day one was challenging as the moderate sea-breeze was oscillating more than usual.  In race one, both left and right could pay, just a matter of timing and patience.  Be it left or right, the mark roundings were usually crowded as were the finishes.  Four boats finished abeam of each other ( http://sports.webshots.com/photo/2303066470040772063JStnCH ) setting the tone for the regatta as a whole.  .22 Caliber took the first bullet of the day followed closely by Cahoula and Dynamo Humm.

Race two brought a bit more breeze though it continued to be rather shifty, similar to race one.  Cahoula took the second bullet with Cheap Trick earning a come from behind second place.

Race three conditions had more breeze and tight racing.  Wild Tchoup’ (being sailed by Ken K.) was always in the hunt but the third bullet went to .22 Caliber.  At the end of day one, there was a tie for first place between .22 Caliber and Cahoula.

Day two racing started in lighter breeze than day one.  In race one, Cheap Trick jumped out to an early lead followed closely by Fast Company.   The rest of the fleet was again tightly packed, several positions changing at the second upwind mark rounding as a result of the strong current.   Cheap Trick maintained the lead, taking the first bullet of the day.  Fast Company was a comfortable second.

In the final race of the day and regatta, Uranium (sailed by Ken’s son Paul), Lesson #22, and Fresh Aire wrestled with each other around the first lap.  .22 Caliber worked their way into the mix as well.  Uranium hung on to take the final bullet.  The last race impacted almost all of the final finishing places as previously noted.  The specific changes occurring were:  third up to first; first down to second; second down to third; fifth up to fourth; fourth down to fifth; seventh up to sixth; tenth up to seventh; sixth down to eighth; eighth down to ninth; ninth down to tenth; thirteenth up to twelfth; twelfth down to thirteenth.

A big thanks goes to PCYC for hosting the event (and two thumbs up on the complimentary draft beer from local microbrew) as well as to Jay and Linden Williams for the use of their home for Saturday evening’s J22 party, sponsored by New Orleans J22 Fleet 46.  A special tribute was paid to Jim and Jan O’Neal as well as Harry Chapman, acknowledging the O’Neal’s efforts in obtaining the perpetual trophy, named in honor of Harry, for this specific GYA event.

Here are some links to pictures taken by Martha Heausler. These are great shots of the weekend.

040_37.jpg April 21-22, 2007 JYC is hosting the Gilliland Capdevielle Regatta and the Spring Fling (open) Regatta. I know this sounds a little confusing but here’s how this deal works. The “G” is a GYA Capdevielle event for Flying Scots only. This is part of the GYA Capdevielle series of which YCs of the GYA send a representative boat/team to compete for honors. There will be three races for this and it will start a little later on Saturday than the Spring Fling Regatta which is open to everyone and as many boats as we can muster. All classes are welcome. We are anticipating J/22, Catalina 22, PHRF, maybe others. If I didn’t list your favorite class then post a comment and start talking some class into racing. Lightnings, Snipe or Sunfish anyone?

I know this is a J/22 site but from time to time I jump off onto a Flying Scot or a Laser just for kicks… or should I say to get kicked. Besides, I am really promoting racing locally, with a slant towards one design. So come on out, jump on a hull, sit down, hang on and scream a while. It’ll be good for you!
