Jackson, MS — Looks like just another “ho humm” year for the DH team of Mart Lamar, Edgar Buchanan and Tim Taylor. They needed a win over Big John in today’s race and they did. At the Fleet Christmas party I thought I overheard Mart and John talking a little smack. I’m sure it wasn’t them, probably just the crew. Timmy doesn’t know how to whisper nor does he care. I heard everything from, “It’ll be too cold to race Sunday,” to “I just don’t have the crew, it’s an arm’s race.” Well yes, I guess it is an arms race. I want the biggest arms I can get. I understand Team Blue Bayou 2 was trying to fly in Mr. Flynn for the last race to insure he would win, and get a gold star on his refrigerator. But that was too expensive, might have been a little heavy too. But we seem to look the other way when the wind is up to 20. BB2 had to settle for local Quantum Rock Star Ian who shows up before biggest race or the year smoking a cuban and sucking on a Bud. That’s nerves of steel. Go get ’em.
So the word is everyone got a great start, clear air and all. But Team McGowan was by far the fastest they’ve ever been. New Sails? Mr. McG tried to light up a couple of folks at the party talking about his new set of rags that he is sure will whip everybody. He may be right. Stay tuned to the first series to see how he does.

Our locals, Dale Currie, Tom Williams and Bishop Blackwell went to Montego Bay this week for a the Jamin’ 2008 Regatta.  I’ve always heard this is a great place to go sail in December. According to the text messages the boys are having a blast.  First day reports are summarized as cool blue water, nice breezes, rolling waves, 75 degrees, and dis-masting.  Apparently some bulkheads needed some maintenance on the charter boat.  Everyone is ok, No worries mon!

The next day, the Supper Club acquired another charter and as I hear it was a real upgrade. Bish texted:

Ok – here’s the salt water update. race 1, 2nd rode nice lifts, breeze at 10 and building. Race 2 and 3, took 6s – breeze heavy at the start (teens with cool sea swells) then dies with weird little puffs at the leeward mark and doldrums down that third of the course. 4th race really weird with a funky starboard rounding at the yacht club – took a 4th.

We’re real light. But now we’re off to the Groovy Grouper for dinner with the fleet. Last race was a throw out – we’re tied for fourth 2 points out of  3rd.

It was touch and go in the last race of the Spring Series. as reported last week there was only one point between the top three boats. JV was able to sneak out an aggressive port tack start and he never looked back from there. Dynamo had guest helmsman, Robert aboard since Mart was out of town but that wasn’t enough to keep JV in second place. Good racing by all in this last race. I’m looking forward to a drifting Summer Series. (NOT!)

Also let’s welcome two new teams to Fleet 63. Dr. Giorgio Aru has purchased Escape #729 and Russell McCarty has recently purchased Laughing Stock #711. Russell and Giorgio are already coming up to speed quickly as they are putting their crew lists together.
