Folks around JYC are getting their trailers and boats ready to head to New Orleans for the J22 Midwinter Nationals. Last I looked there were 39 boats registered, 4 from JYC.
What kind of weather can we expect? Who knows. I’ve been there when it is blowing the dog off the chain and when it is lumpy and light. (Lake sailors don’t do well in light and lumpy.) One thing is for sure there will be a party Thursday when we arrive, Friday, Saturday and Sunday after races. BTW SYC has a new clubhouse but they still have the same gracious staff and members. So hook up and bring it to SYC!

This was an awesome event. About 40 boats raced, we had a wide range of conditions to sail. SYC has a gorgeous new facility. A little confusing on where to go. I kept hanging out on the second floor thinking that was all there was. Then I learned about the 3rd floor! You can read much more about this on http://www.j22mw.com.
In Summary, the RC tried to wear us down on Friday with four races back to back. Then the fleet went down to the quarter for more socializing and beads throwing. Most of the discussion was about the expected high wind on Saturday. By the time midnight rolled around no one was really worried about “that silly forecast, weathermen are only right 39% of the time”. Well the weatherman was right. So Saturday it blew the dog off the chain. Officially 24.7. I don’t know if that was mph or kph, whatever. Team Fresh Aire could only make it for one race then went back to the club and the third floor for lunch. We felt a little dejected and ashamed we didn’t continue racing, but the shore crew picked up our spirits saying we were the smartest sailors. The Bloody Mary didn’t hurt too badly either. (Last I counted 16 boats either came in, didn’t go out or didn’t race all three.)
Sunday conditions were much more mild and everyone went out including Watt with his bandaged head from Saturday’s first race. It was a very nice sail on Sunday and had great weather the whole weekend, regardless of the breeze.
